A Story Inspiration for “W” and the Font “War Priest” (#AtoZChallenge)

■ ■ ■ New Format for A to Z Challenge Posts ■ ■ ■

For the remainder of April, my Blogging from A to Z April Challenge posts will include: (1) the font/prompt info, (2) a brief story pitch inspired by the chosen font, and (3) any supplemental creative fodder (e.g., notes, character sketches, perspective lines, images) I chose to share.

Just the name of this font was enough to evoke visions of a post-apocalyptic world where mankind has reverted to a more primitive/medieval existence to survive.  Starting with the Twitter hashtag prompt of dystopia (via @SciFiFri, for inquiring minds), I drafted a few lines (see below) that helped set the scene.

The picture painted in my mind’s eye is that of a land overtaken by a drought. Water is scarce and the population has dwindled down to those who live in tiny villages near small monasteries where the monks are trained to protect those in the parish as well as pray for water.

For Day 27, I chose the font War Priest by Iconian Fonts as my prompt and inspiration for today’s flash fiction.

Brief Synopsis

Zephyr has lived as a monk since entering the monastery as a half-starved orphan in search of food.  When various leaders gather to beseech the monastery’s help to rid their parish zones of roving Drinkers, the mutated humans who have adapted to consume human blood, Zephyr and his fellow warrior priests are sent to aid the parishioners to pray for water and to fight off the Drinkers. Life outside the monastery walls complicates things. Zephyr finds himself questioning his life’s path when he meets Becca, a young widowed scientist who seeks solutions to the water scarcity. As their relationship evolves, things get more complicated as he comes to care for Becca and her son. Yet he can’t shake the feeling she’s hiding something, like the fact that she and her son are Drinkers.

First Lines/ Favorite Lines

“Man had destroyed the water cycle. Food was scarce. The Drinkers evolved to consume human blood to survive the drought.”

“The war priests were unlike any men ever seen. Well-fed and muscular, many joined their ranks for food as opposed to faith.”
